What Is the Opportunity?

The Travelers Canada Co-Op Program provides qualified students with an excellent opportunity to gain first-hand experience, receive valuable on-the-job training and learn more about the property & casualty insurance industry. Co-Op students receive challenging work assignments that add value and impact the organization.

What Will You Do?

  • Each Co-Op student will be expected to complete challenging and meaningful project work over the course of this program.
  • Co-Op duties will vary based on the area of the business that is supported, specific assignments and business needs.
  • As a part of the Travelers Canada Co-Op Program, we also offer:

As a member of the Actuarial Department, the candidate will act as an effective contributor to their team, and will interact with insurance professionals from underwriting, claims, finance and information systems as necessary.

There are four roles available — one each for:
Actuarial Research and Development (R&D)
Business Pricing
Personal Insurance Pricing
Actuarial Reserving

Candidates may be required to work for other teams on an ad-hoc basis however. The candidate will be responsible for a range of projects and tasks which will involve interaction with many areas of the business.

Duties may include:
– Data preparation, validation, reconciliation and analysis of premium, claims and other data
– Using software such as SAS, MS Access and Excel to produce analyses
– Communicating results with finance and/or the business and securing their buy in
– Managing multiple projects simultaneously
– Developing product knowledge
– Analyzing and assisting with property and auto rate level indications
– Testing of new rate systems
– Working with actuarial colleagues from other business areas
– Participating in rate filing preparations
– Supporting implementation of rate changes, product enhancements and testing controls

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Students who are serious about entering the insurance industry is preferred.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above preferred.
  • Students completing their final or 3rd year is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access, VBA, or SAS considered an asset
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Detailed oriented.
  • Skilled independent problem-solver.
  • Self-motivated team player.
  • Prior actuarial experience considered an asset.
  • Targeted Majors: Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics or equivalent.

What is a Must Have?

  • Must be pursuing post-secondary degree.
  • Legally eligible to work in the Canada.
